France Orders Targeted Curfews as Authorities Respond to Unrest
“I have asked prefects to trigger a number of curfews for this evening,” he told reporters after an interministerial crisis meeting.
“They will be partial, they may be very localized," he added.
Regional prefects will coordinate with mayors and business representatives to determine where restrictions are necessary to safeguard residents and protect property.
“There is no question of placing all of Paris under curfew. That would make no sense,” Lecornu said, stressing that a citywide restriction was not being considered.
Although the government has not ruled out declaring a state of emergency if circumstances demand it, the prime minister indicated that geographically limited curfews were currently the more suitable response.
“My determination to restore order is total,” he said.
Authorities are also launching an extensive investigation into the unrest. Lecornu announced “a very significant, massive judicial operation starting today,” with nearly 200 investigators from the Paris police prefecture tasked with reviewing photographs and video footage to identify those suspected of involvement.
“First and foremost, those who caused the damage must pay,” he said.
Alongside the security measures, the government plans to assist businesses affected by the disturbances. A short-time work scheme is due to begin Tuesday, while a dedicated support fund will help companies address immediate cash-flow pressures.
