France Faces Mounting Costs After Weekend Protest Violence

(MENAFN) French Economy Minister Roland Lescure estimated Wednesday that damage caused by violence during weekend demonstrations could amount to tens or even hundreds of millions of euros.

In an interview with French radio, Lescure characterized the unrest as "extremely serious," accusing "two violent movements: anarchists and thugs" of causing disruption within the country.

The government is coordinating with insurance providers to help businesses and shopkeepers affected by the destruction, the minister said. He also stressed that officials would take every necessary step to prevent similar incidents during upcoming demonstrations.

"We will do everything possible to prevent this from happening again," Lescure said, referring to protests scheduled for Saturday.

The Yellow Vest movement is preparing to stage a rally in Paris on Saturday, with its coordinator, Benjamin Ball, confirming that organizers had filed an official notification with the Paris police prefecture, according to reports. Ball also said that the Paris branch of the General Confederation of Labour and a student union intended to hold a separate gathering at Bastille.

The upcoming mobilization follows demonstrations in the French capital a week earlier, when a protest over the increasing cost of living escalated into confrontations and property damage.

On Oct. 17, approximately 550,000 people participated in demonstrations across France. The protests were accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police, vehicle fires and looting at several shops. Authorities arrested more than 2,000 people during the unrest.
