EU Extends Syria Sanctions, While Removing Some Entities
(MENAFN) The European Union has extended its restrictive measures targeting individuals and entities associated with Syria’s former Bashar al-Assad government for another year, while also removing several institutions from its sanctions list as part of a broader policy shift, according to reports.
The EU Council said in a statement that the measures will remain in place until June 1, 2027, following its annual review of sanctions imposed on figures linked to the former Syrian leadership.
At the same time, the bloc removed seven entities from its blacklist, including Syria’s defense and interior ministries. The move is intended to encourage greater engagement with Damascus and support the country’s transition after years of conflict.
The decision comes amid a wider adjustment in EU policy toward Syria following the collapse of the Assad government, according to reports.
In May 2025, the EU lifted all economic sanctions on Syria in an effort to support what it described as a peaceful and inclusive political transition, along with reconstruction and economic recovery.
However, targeted sanctions on individuals and organizations tied to the former regime, as well as security-related restrictions, remain in place.
