Germany Urges Iran to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Regional Tensions

(MENAFN) Germany has again called on Iran to restore unrestricted maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a briefing in Berlin that Iran must end what he described as actions disrupting one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes. He argued that Tehran should no longer “hold the region and the entire world hostage” and emphasized that its nuclear activities must be verifiably halted, alongside a cessation of attacks against Israel and regional partners.

Merz also stated that Iran should ensure “free and toll-free passage” through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint through which a significant share of global oil and gas shipments passes.

He added that he had recently spoken with US President Donald Trump, and that both sides agreed on the importance of pursuing negotiated solutions to the escalating crisis.

German officials have repeatedly warned that instability in the region is affecting global energy supplies and contributing to economic pressure in Europe, given the Strait of Hormuz’s role in transporting roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas flows.

The latest statement comes as tensions remain elevated following military exchanges in the region and continued uncertainty over maritime security in the Gulf area.
