Syria, Egypt Launch Joint Business Council

(MENAFN) Syria's Economy and Industry Minister Nidal al-Shaar signed a landmark decision Sunday establishing a formal Syrian-Egyptian business council, signaling a determined bid to deepen economic ties between the two neighboring nations.

As reported by a state news agency, the decree names Ghassan Karim as council chairman, with Ahmed Ragheb Agha and Muhammad Basil Radwan Samaqia appointed as deputy heads, and Wael Khair al-Nen designated as executive director.

The council's launch carries added diplomatic weight, coinciding precisely with the first official visit to Egypt by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani — a milestone moment in the two countries' rekindling bilateral relationship.

Sunday's announcement is the latest in a string of economic outreach moves by Damascus. On March 26, Minister al-Shaar signed separate decrees establishing joint business councils with Spain, Kuwait, and the Netherlands, as part of a broader strategy to empower the private sector and forge stronger commercial bridges with both Arab and international markets.

The groundwork for Syrian-Egyptian economic rapprochement was laid even earlier. Last January, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa received a delegation from the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce in Damascus, framing the bilateral relationship in unambiguous terms — stating that the Syrian-Egyptian relationship "was not a luxury, but a duty."
