Oman, Iran Address Maritime Security, Nuclear Deal Prospects
(MENAFN) The foreign ministers of Oman and Iran held high-level telephone consultations on Sunday to address maritime security concerns and explore avenues for de-escalating regional tensions, the Omani Foreign Ministry confirmed.
According to a ministry statement, Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi reviewed the current state of negotiations aimed at brokering an agreement between Tehran and Washington on Iran's nuclear program and a range of other unresolved disputes.
The call comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains under a US naval blockade, enforced since April 13 and targeting Iranian maritime traffic through the critical waterway, following a collapse in diplomatic efforts to resolve the two nations' ongoing conflict.
The two ministers also exchanged views on maritime navigation rights and freedom of movement across the region, discussing concrete measures to contain further escalation and keep dialogue channels open. The ministry said the discussions aimed at "pressing toward a path of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding," while ensuring the rights of all parties and adherence to international law.
Oman has historically served as a trusted backchannel between Tehran and Washington, playing a pivotal mediating role in successive rounds of nuclear diplomacy.
The current crisis traces back to Feb. 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran, triggering retaliatory action from Tehran against Israel and regional states hosting US military assets. Iran subsequently moved to disrupt commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies transit.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation was announced on April 8, followed by diplomatic talks held in Islamabad on April 11–12 that ultimately failed to yield a formal agreement. US President Donald Trump later unilaterally extended the truce at Islamabad's request, without specifying a revised deadline for resolution.
