EU Hails Nigeria as Africa's Anchor Against Terror

(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday praised Nigeria as a critical frontline defender against extremism, reaffirming Brussels' dedication to deepening ties across West Africa.

"Extremist groups like Boko Haram pose not only a threat to Nigeria, but also to the region. Nigeria is a bulwark in the fight against terrorism, and Europe stands shoulder to shoulder with Nigeria," Kallas told a joint press conference with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Abuja, following her co-chairmanship of the Nigeria-EU Ministerial Dialogue.

"As Africa's most populous nation and economic engine, you are a political heavyweight and also a regional anchor. Nigeria's stability is crucial for the entire region," she added.

Kallas painted a sobering picture of the broader regional landscape, warning that West Africa faces compounding threats from military coups, cross-border terrorist activity in the Sahel, and worsening humanitarian emergencies.

"That is why the EU remains firmly committed to its partnership with ECOWAS," she said, referring to the Economic Community of West African States.

The EU foreign policy chief also spotlighted Brussels' backing of ECOWAS in bolstering regional stability, with particular focus on the future operational capacity of the bloc's standby military force.

During her inaugural visit to Nigeria, Kallas noted that bilateral cooperation has gained steady ground across trade, investment, and green and digital development initiatives, while also citing headway on the EU-Nigeria Readmission Agreement governing migration flows.
