Iraq Won’t Allow Threats Against Iran, PM Condemns US-Israeli Strikes

(MENAFN) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said Wednesday that Iraq will not allow its territory to be used to launch any threats against Iran, while also denouncing the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against the country.

According to reports, the remarks were made during a phone conversation between al-Sudani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The discussion focused on the latest regional developments following the ongoing military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iran.

During the call, al-Sudani criticized the attacks on Iran, describing them as acts of aggression that violate international laws, principles and ethical standards, according to a statement.

"During the call, the Iraqi prime minister offered condolences to the government and people of Iran over the martyrdom of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei), which occurred during the brutal attack by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran," the statement said.

He also reaffirmed that Baghdad would not permit its land to be used in any action that could threaten Iran.

He also stressed that the Iraqi government “will under no circumstances allow any threat to the Islamic Republic to originate from Iraqi borders,” it added.

Araghchi expressed appreciation to Iraq’s government, its citizens and religious authorities for condemning the attacks and standing in solidarity with Iran, according to the statement.

He said the Iranian people remain committed to protecting their national dignity as well as the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Iranian foreign minister also attributed the growing instability in the region to the actions of the United States and Israel, stressing that regional and Islamic nations must remain vigilant against attempts to create division among Muslim countries and destabilize the region.

According to reports, Israel and the United States have continued a wide-ranging military campaign against Iran since Saturday, which has resulted in at least 926 deaths, including that of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military officials.
