EU Weighs Retaliation Against Trump
According to officials participating in the strategic planning cited by the Financial Times, these countermeasures are being assembled to strengthen European negotiators' bargaining position before critical discussions with Trump at next week's World Economic Forum in Davos.
The EU has maintained this tariff inventory since last year but suspended implementation until Feb. 6 to prevent a transatlantic trade confrontation, the report indicated. Yet as tensions over Greenland intensify, member state representatives convened Sunday to explore reactivating the tariff package while simultaneously examining deployment of the Anti-Coercion Instrument—a mechanism that could restrict U.S. businesses' market access across the bloc.
This development follows a unified front from eight nations facing U.S. tariff threats—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—who released a collective statement Sunday expressing "full solidarity" with Denmark and Greenland.
In a Saturday social media declaration, Trump announced Washington would impose a 10-percent tariff beginning Feb. 1 on imports from the eight aforementioned nations. He cautioned the levy would escalate to 25 percent on June 1 and persist until achieving a "complete and total purchase" of Greenland.
Trump, scheduled to participate in the World Economic Forum on Wednesday and Thursday, is anticipated to conduct confidential negotiations with European officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and attend a gathering of Western nations supporting Ukraine.
