China Sues Missouri Over Covid-19 Allegations
According to documents released by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, the case was filed by Chinese scientific and governmental institutions. The defendants include the State of Missouri, Governor Mike Kehoe, US Senator Eric Schmitt, and former Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey.
The complaint asserts that Missouri’s lawsuits and public statements amounted to “vexatious litigation” and defamation, leading to significant financial harm and undermining China’s sovereignty and development interests. Beijing is demanding $50.5 billion in damages and legal costs, along with public apologies in major US and Chinese media outlets.
This move follows Missouri’s efforts to enforce a $24 billion default judgment issued earlier this year by a federal court in Missouri. That case, originally filed in 2020, accused China of concealing information about Covid-19 and disrupting global supplies of protective equipment during the pandemic’s early stages. Chinese entities did not participate in those proceedings.
Missouri officials have stated their intent to pursue Chinese state-owned assets to satisfy the judgment. Beijing has dismissed the ruling as illegitimate and politically motivated, warning of retaliation should its assets be targeted.
