France blocks editor from X
“My X account has been blocked in France. I have no idea what I did to offend [French President Emmanuel] Macron – I haven’t even been saying that his wife is a man,” Simonyan commented on Telegram, referencing a conspiracy theory about France’s first lady.
French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly accused RT of disseminating disinformation, a claim he first voiced during his 2017 presidential run. He has not publicly shared evidence to support the allegations.
Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, both the European Union and the United Kingdom have banned RT along with several other Russian broadcasters, citing concerns over propaganda. In retaliation, Russian authorities have prohibited access to Western-funded media outlets such as the BBC and Deutsche Welle.
A representative of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has criticized these moves as “global censorship and a regime of zero tolerance for dissenting opinions.”
Earlier this year, French prosecutors opened a case against X, suspecting that the platform might be used to interfere in the country's political affairs. X’s parent company denounced the investigation, accusing the French government of using it as a pretext to suppress freedom of expression.
