Media reports hackers exploiting Microsoft defect to initiate worldwide assault
The cyberattack, which unfolded in recent days, targeted organizations across the US, EU, China, and Brazil. The hackers exploited an undisclosed security flaw that allowed them to steal cryptographic keys, enabling persistent access to sensitive systems even after they were rebooted. The vulnerability went undetected despite Microsoft releasing a security update just two weeks prior.
“This is a serious vulnerability,” said Adam Meyers from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. “Anyone running a hosted SharePoint server is potentially at risk.” The identity of the hackers remains unclear, according to The Washington Post.
Microsoft confirmed the breach and announced it is cooperating with the US Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense to mitigate the impact. With no immediate fix available, the company advised affected organizations to disconnect their servers from the internet as a precaution.
This latest incident has heightened concerns over Microsoft’s ability to protect its software. Despite being a key provider of technology for governments worldwide, Microsoft has suffered several security lapses over the past two years, including breaches of its corporate networks and the email accounts of top executives.
In response to rising cybersecurity threats and growing geopolitical tensions, governments are increasingly looking to reduce reliance on Western tech providers and strengthen their own digital sovereignty. The EU has ramped up efforts to develop domestic alternatives to American cloud and AI services, while China is advancing a campaign to replace foreign technology by 2027.
Russia, which views US technology as a security risk, is developing isolated systems and expanding the use of state-controlled platforms. Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Microsoft halted new software sales in Russia and now offers only limited services in the country.
