AI empowers people with disabilities beyond what’s possible
One standout voice was 19-year-old Tilly Lockey, who shared how her life transformed with the help of AI-driven prosthetics. Having relied on prosthetic limbs from a young age, Lockey moved beyond outdated, single-function models to cutting-edge bionic arms enhanced by artificial intelligence. These new limbs allow her to shift effortlessly between 30 different grip patterns, making her movements faster, more versatile, and better suited to everyday life.
Her bionic arms, named the Hero Arm, were created through a partnership with the UK-based company Open Bionics, which she began collaborating with at just nine years old. “They’re amazing. They’ve broken all the records: fastest, strongest, waterproof,” Lockey said.
Reflecting on her earlier experiences with prosthetics that focused on imitating natural limbs through lifelike silicone, Lockey explained how that approach made her feel isolated. The design left her feeling as though she had to hide her differences. That changed with her current devices — brightly colored, LED-lit, and 3D printed to reflect her personality.
“That, to me, is actually really, really fun,” she explained. “It’s like finally being able to step out and be like, actually, your difference isn’t something that you need to hide.”
Her story captured the summit’s message: AI has the potential not just to support inclusion, but to celebrate individuality — giving people the power to live authentically and confidently.
