Search Continues for Missing After Boat Capsizes in Indonesia

(MENAFN) A rescue effort is currently in progress near the shores of Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra province, after a vessel carrying 18 individuals overturned amid severe weather, according to a statement released Tuesday by the local rescue authority.

Thus far, seven people have been saved following the incident that occurred on Monday, while 11 others remain unaccounted for, the agency noted in their official communication.

The vessel had been transporting ten regional government staff members along with eight additional passengers.

It departed from Sikakap, a small settlement within the Mentawai Islands, and was en route to another small town, Tuapejat, when the accident took place.

Earlier this month, on July 3, another tragic event occurred when a ferry with 53 passengers and 12 crew members flipped during its journey from Java to Bali.

That incident claimed at least 18 lives, while 30 people were successfully rescued, as reported by the local rescue agency.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has issued alerts regarding "extreme weather conditions" across Indonesia’s maritime regions.
