FSB foils planned assassination plot directed by Ukraine

(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claims to have prevented a planned assassination of a high-ranking Defense Ministry official in Crimea, allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence. The agency announced on Monday that a 25-year-old woman holding both Russian and Ukrainian citizenship had been arrested in connection with the plot.

According to the FSB, the woman was recruited by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and later instructed to carry out a car bombing aimed at killing the military officer ahead of Victory Day celebrations in May 2025. Authorities did not disclose the identity of the intended target.

The woman reportedly received an explosive device from her Ukrainian contacts, intended for use in targeting the officer’s personal vehicle. “The SBU agents who carried out the recruitment and grooming of the terrorist have been identified,” the FSB stated, adding that the suspect was apprehended and components of a Western-manufactured explosive were confiscated.

Footage released by the agency showed a woman with her face blurred being escorted by security personnel. She now faces the possibility of a life sentence if convicted.

The FSB’s announcement comes against the backdrop of an ongoing campaign of sabotage and targeted attacks attributed to Ukrainian operatives. Russian authorities have blamed Kiev for several high-profile killings of senior military officials.

Among them was the April 2025 death of Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, Russia’s deputy chief of General Staff operations, who was killed in a car bombing near Moscow. In a separate incident in December, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, was also killed in a blast outside his residence. Russian officials have publicly accused Ukraine of orchestrating both assassinations.
