Russian kamikaze drone demolishes Ukrainian radar
Accompanying the announcement was a brief video showing several military vehicles moments before being struck, followed by a large explosion and thick black smoke.
Earlier in the month, similar UAV attacks reportedly destroyed a Ukrainian marines’ position in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). Around the same time, Russian forces targeted a Ukrainian drone workshop in the Sumy Region. Footage was also released showing a strike on a Ukrainian ammunition depot in the DPR.
The Geran-2 drone features a flying wing design, carries a warhead exceeding 40 kg, and can operate up to 2,000 km. Although it flies at moderate speeds of about 150–170 km/h, its low radar visibility and ability to follow complex flight paths allow it to evade Ukrainian air defenses effectively.
Russian forces typically launch these drones in large swarms, increasing the chance that some will hit their intended targets. Since the conflict escalated in February 2022, Russia has extensively used long-range drones to strike military and dual-use infrastructure, including weapons storage sites in Ukraine.
The high production rate of Geran-2 drones—potentially dozens or hundreds each month—enables nearly daily swarm attacks by Russian forces.
