Ukraine, US Discuss Military Cooperation
During their talks, the two officials examined collaborative defense-industry ventures, the enforcement of sanctions against Russia, and the outlook for establishing a long-lasting ceasefire.
“We had a substantive discussion focused on our shared goal – achieving a sustainable and just peace,” Umerov remarked in an official statement.
He expressed appreciation for Washington’s ongoing assistance, stating that it “saves lives and brings the end of the war closer.”
A key aspect of their conversation involved joint ventures aimed at producing weaponry within Ukraine and across Europe, particularly systems designed for air defense.
“Some of these projects are already underway, while others are being prepared for launch,” he noted. Umerov indicated that these initiatives might be financed through seized Russian assets or contributions from European allies.
Highlighting Ukraine's experience on the battlefield, especially in the use of drones, Umerov characterized it as a valuable strategic advantage that Kyiv is willing to offer.
The discussion also addressed financial pressure being applied to Moscow.
Umerov emphasized once again that “the Russian energy sector is a key source of funding for the war” and urged for stronger and more coordinated sanctions.
In addition to Umerov’s meeting, Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Chief of the General Staff Maj. Gen. Andrii Hnatov, and military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov provided Kellogg and his delegation with updates on the operational conditions.
They also cautioned that Russia harbors military ambitions extending well beyond Ukrainian territory.
