Macron doesn’t approve of new EU tariffs
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “strong disapproval” on Saturday regarding the US plan to impose 30% tariffs on European Union exports starting August 1. He called for an acceleration in the preparation of “credible countermeasures” to protect EU interests.
“Along with the President of the European Commission, France shares the same very strong disapproval at the announcement of horizontal 30% tariffs on EU exports to the United States from August 1st,” Macron wrote on X.
He stressed the importance of the European Commission demonstrating the bloc’s “determination” to defend its economic interests firmly.
“In particular, this implies speeding up the preparation of credible countermeasures, by mobilising all the instruments at its disposal, including anti-coercion, if no agreement is reached by August 1st,” Macron added.
The French president also voiced France’s “full support” for intensified negotiations aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable deal by the deadline, highlighting the need for respect between trading partners with intertwined interests and value chains.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced plans to levy 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico starting August 1, threatening ongoing US-EU trade discussions that had hoped to finalize a comprehensive agreement this month.
Trump posted on Truth Social letters sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, detailing the upcoming tariffs.
In response, Commission President von der Leyen expressed readiness to work toward a deal with the US by August 1 and pledged to take all necessary steps to protect EU interests, including implementing proportional countermeasures.
