Tehran invites Moscow to assist in reestablishing in wake of Israeli-US airstrikes

(MENAFN) Iranian officials have expressed hope that Russia can assist in rebuilding infrastructure damaged by recent Israeli and US airstrikes, according to Tehran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali. He pointed to a strategic partnership agreement signed by the two countries in January, which includes economic cooperation, joint efforts against terrorism, and opposition to unilateral sanctions and violations of international law.

Jalali told Russian media that Russia could help restore civilian infrastructure if needed and potentially act as a mediator to ease regional tensions.

Last month, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Iran, citing worries over Tehran’s nuclear program—a claim dismissed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and US intelligence. The US later conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites before pushing both sides toward a ceasefire.

The attacks caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure and resulted in hundreds of deaths. According to Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, the death toll has reached 1,100. Iran’s retaliatory strikes caused 28 deaths in Israel, according to local reports.

During the 12-day conflict, several countries, including Russia, evacuated their citizens from Iran. Among those at risk were hundreds of specialists working at Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant near Bushehr. Although the city was reportedly targeted, the plant itself was unharmed. Russia had a key role in building, commissioning, supplying fuel to, and managing spent fuel from the facility to reduce proliferation risks.

Tehran maintains its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. Following the strikes, Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA and expelled its inspectors.

Russia condemned the Israeli and US attacks as severe breaches of international law and offered to mediate. Together with China, it accused Israel and the US of undermining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which protects the right to civilian nuclear energy.

The UN, human rights groups, and legal experts have also condemned the airstrikes on Iran.
