Jeffries Criticizes Trump's Stance on Ukraine, Russia
(MENAFN) On Monday, U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sharply criticized President Donald Trump for his handling of the Ukraine crisis, asserting that Trump's alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin is detrimental to American interests.
"Vladimir Putin has spent the entire year punking Donald Trump and the Trump administration," Jeffries stated during a press conference on Capitol Hill.
Jeffries argued that despite making assurances to the American public, Trump has repeatedly failed to follow through — notably on his commitment to achieving peace in Ukraine.
He pointed out the inconsistency between Trump's promises and his actions, highlighting the administration's ongoing struggles to present a firm stance against Russia.
The Democratic leader's comments were made shortly after Trump introduced a more aggressive strategy toward Russia in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This new policy includes a proposed delivery of additional missile systems and sophisticated arms to Kyiv, along with a 50-day ultimatum for Moscow to reach a ceasefire agreement or face "very severe" secondary economic penalties.
"Donald Trump has spent the first six months of his presidency playing footsie with Vladimir Putin, and the response from Vladimir Putin, a sworn enemy of the United States of America, has been to unleash terror on Ukrainian children, communities and civilians," Jeffries added.
He concluded by questioning Trump's recent change in tone, implying it may be too little, too late: "Donald Trump has zero credibility in this area. Is he just now figuring out that Ukraine is a friend to the United States of America and Russia is an enemy?" Jeffries asked.
Jeffries' remarks were widely reported by news agencies, emphasizing the ongoing division in U.S. politics over foreign policy toward Russia and Ukraine.
